People make strategies, plans and systems work

Everyone seems to be struggling with creating a competitive advantage, reducing costs, and providing memorable and distinctive customer service. In today's reality, winning requires execution of clear strategies through people.

We work with thousands of companies across New Zealand. They range from local divisions of multinationals to local start up businesses. One thing we have learned in nearly 50 years in business here is that core business issues in businesses of all sizes and shapes are similar.

We know what works and does not work in New Zealand

Techniques change with the times, but strategies built on sound principles stand the test of time.

In most MBA programmes, students learn about competitive strategy, marketing strategy, financial strategy etc, but there are few, if any, courses that focus exclusively on executing strategies. Most courses give students only passive exposure to principles of execution.

Even working managers seem to know much more about planning than they do about achieving planned results.

In this report, we invite you to learn what forward thinking owners, executives, and managers do to grow their business while boldly facing current reality.

TOUGH TRUTH : If your plans are not being executed it's your fault.Do yourself and your organisation a big favour and replace "they are not executing" with "I'm ineffective" at executing our strategies.

Revisit your strategic plans

In a given year, fewer than 35% of strategic initiatives produce promised outcomes and it's not just because others didn't execute. Business leaders need to face the reality that their business strategies may be responsible for a large portion of ineffective execution.

Ask Yourself

  • Do we have a strategy? YES NO
  • Is the strategy working? YES NO I DON'T KNOW
  • Are we doing what we said we would do on our plan? YES NO
  • If not, when will be do what we said we would do on our plan
  • Am I getting dragged into why we are not doing what we said we would do?YES NO
  • If you are doing what was on the plan, are your actions producing desired results? YES NO
  • If you or your team are not producing desired results, what are you going to do about it and when exactly?

In a study of over 160 companies over a five year period, success was strongly related to, among other things to an ability to flawlessly execute.

Factors such as culture, organizational structure, and operational execution were also vital to the success of the business

Surprizing to some, researchers found no correlation between a company's investment in technology and total return on investment over a 10 year period.

Change initiatives also showed no cause/effect correlation.

Seven Disciplines of Execution

  1. Clarify what is really happening in your market and organisation
  2. Connect everyone to the strategic business direction
  3. Engage a willing team by planning out specific business outcomes and goals in contrast to your current reality
  4. Decide who is going to what, by when
  5. Assign and conduct meetings that capture learning. Adjust future action steps from your learning
  6. Recognise and celebrate achievements
  7. Coach for continued performance.
